Nouns as Adjective Modifiers
Many nouns can be used as adjectives. They become adjectives when they modify other nouns and answer one of two questions about the nouns they are modifying. (What kind? Which one?) Examples: apple juice (what kind of juice?) summer habitat (which habitat?) The macaw perched on the top of the rock ledge. Write/type the following sentences. The process by which an adjective describes a word or makes it more specific is called modification. An adjective usually comes before the word it modifies. It may, however, come after the noun. To modify means to change slightly. An adjective modifies meaning by answering any of four questions about a noun or pronoun. What kind? Which one? How much? How many? A linking verb connects a noun or pronoun at or near the beginning of the sentence with a word at or near the end of the sentence. In English the most common linking verb is the form of be. Transitive & Intransitive Verbs An Action verb can be transitive or intransitive. Transitive directions the action to someone or something named in the sentence. Intransitive if it does not direct action to someone or something in the sentence. The receiver of the the action is called the direct object of the verb. Intransitive verbs have no direct object. TRANSITIVE: George carried his shoes to the mat outside the door. INTRANSITIVE: The flower grew quickly. To determine if a verb is transitive or intransitive, ask Whom? or What? after the verb. IF you can find the answer, then the verb is transitive. Directions: Write each sentence (pencil-print). Identify each verb by circling it (ink). At the end of the sentence label transitive or intransitive. Rewrite sentences in cursive & ink for penmanship. Make sure it is very neat! 1. LINKING VERBS
A linking verb connects a noun or pronoun at or near the sentence beginning of a sentence with a word at or near the end of the sentence. Example: The winners of the race were Hazel and Gretchen. She looks old. He is an archeologist. The linking verbs is, were, and looks act almost as equal signs between the words they link. Verbs can tell you whether an event is occurring in the past, present or future. They tell time. Some verbs express action. Other verbs link between two parts of the sentence. Still others, point out that something exists. Action Verbs: Tells what action a person or thing is performing. Visible and Mental Action: Visible- actions that can be seen such as a bird flying or duck swimming. Mental- can be seen only with difficulty, if at all such as remembering, dreaming, or worrying.
