Transitive & Intransitive Verbs
An Action verb can be transitive or intransitive. Transitive directions the action to someone or something named in the sentence. Intransitive if it does not direct action to someone or something in the sentence. The receiver of the the action is called the direct object of the verb. Intransitive verbs have no direct object.
TRANSITIVE: George carried his shoes to the mat outside the door.
INTRANSITIVE: The flower grew quickly.
To determine if a verb is transitive or intransitive, ask Whom? or What? after the verb. IF you can find the answer, then the verb is transitive.
Directions: Write each sentence (pencil-print). Identify each verb by circling it (ink). At the end of the sentence label transitive or intransitive. Rewrite sentences in cursive & ink for penmanship. Make sure it is very neat!
1. The Shang people began as a clan of villagers in central China.
2. Their rule occurred during two separate periods.
3. The first period of time came before the establishment of the capital city.
4. Archeologists discovered most of the artifacts from the first period in graves.
5. During the second period, the rulers practiced a complex system of ancestor worship.
