Linking Verbs
Linking Verbs connect nouns/pronouns with words that identify or describe the nouns/pronouns. The most common forms of the linking verbs are "be" verbs: am, are, is, was, and were.
Example: George is the class president. Martha was ready.
Several over verbs also function as linking verbs. They work to connect the parts of the sentence in the same way as the forms of be.
Example: The teacher remained calm. (Calm describes the teacher - adj.)
Copy each sentence below. Underline the linking verb. Then draw a double headed arrow to the words that are connected by the verb. (reminder: pencil-print, ink for underline & arrow)
1. The Greek language was understandable throughout the country.
2. All the dialects sounded familiar.
3. Within each city-state, customs and religious practices were the same.
4. Four national festivals became traditional.
5. The Olympic games were the most important.
6. The Greek city-states were very independent.
7.However, some unification seemed possible.
