(Transitive Verb is an action verb that directs action from the performer of the action toward the receiver of the actin. The "receiver" of the action is a person place, or thing--that is , a noun or pronoun. An Intransitive Verb expresses action or tell something about the subject of the sentence but does not direct action toward another noun or pronoun.
Examples: TRANSITIVE The captain rang the bell. INTRANSITIVE The bell rang for dinner. TRANSITIVE The captain sailed the ship. INTRANSITIVE The ship sailed out to sea. Exercise 1: Write the underlined action verb in each of the sentences below. After each verb, write transitive or intransitive. If you labeled the verb transitive, identify the noun toward which the action is directed.
Exercise 2: Revision Practice.- Revise each sentence by replacing the underlined words with a single, precise verb. (BTW a precise verb gives the reader an accurate understanding of the action that was or will be taking place...makes the idea perfectly clear.) First time write sentence in print & pencil...revision in ink. You will rewrite these sentences in cursive and ink.
