Notes You Need to Know
Adjective
: a word used to describe a noun or pronoun ot to give a noun or pronoun a more specific meaning.  Modifies: act of changing something slightly.  Adjectives add more information that answers any of four questions:
  • What kind? 
  • Which one? 
  • How many? 
  • How much?
Adjectives usually come before the noun but may come after.

ARTICLES:  a, an, and the are three adjectives that are called articles.    The is called a definite article because it refers to a specific noun. A and an are indefinite articles because they refer to any one of a class of nouns.

Exercise 1: Write the sentences below.  Underline the regular adjectives, circle the articles.
  1. Parrots are found in the warm tropical areas of the planet.
  2. A small number of species inhabit the cooler temperate regions.
  3. The colorful birds have red, green, blue, and yellow plumage.
  4. Parrots eat a wide variety of hearty seeds and nutritious fruits.
  5. Parrots are monogamous, often remaining with a single mate for life.

Nouns Used as Adjectives: A noun used as an adjective answers the question "What Kind? or Which one?" about a noun that follows it.

Exercise 2: Write the noun used as an adjective in each sentence.
  1. Macaws are large, noisy members of the parrot family.
  2. The colorful macaws live in large flocks and roost along steep canyon walls.
  3. They dig small nest holes in the relatively soft sandstone.
  4. Major food sources for macaws are fruits and nuts.
  5. Macaws perch among the tree branches while they eat.
  6. Occasionally, they will also search the forest floor for food.
  7. Because they live in the warm tropics of South America, the birds do not migrate to a winter territory.
  8. Unfortunately, the macaw population is dwindling because of the actions of humans.
  9. Cattle ranches are the biggest threat to the remaining habitat of the macaw.
  10. The birds are also threatened by wildlife poachers.

Create a short story based on the 7 point short story structure.  Begin by filling out #1-7.  Then begin writing your story.  Assignment Twist: story must include the line, "...but if anyone asks, tell them we're  fine."  Underline this line in the story.  Story should be a minimum of one full page not including the 7 point story structure.  Have fun with this. Think beyond what is typical and ordinary.
