This was a request for a personal sharing. Our unit of study in the 8th grade class is "Who I Am, Who I Want to Be." Short story: Name/Nombres by Julia Alverez. Daniel was able to capture his understanding of the theme in his journal prompt... and was willing to share his work with the class.
Prompt: "Does your name suit you? Explain why.
My name suits me well, I'm not saying another name could be better; but Daniel fits well.
My name means, "God saves." God has saved my life multiple times.
Daniel is a strong name. Easy to learn, and short. It's not a fancy name, or a name that always needs to be said fully. Dan or Danny can be used as a substitutes. I like this, it means my name doesn't waste time when being learned, like some long foreign names do.
Daniel is my name and I am named after my grandfather who served in the Navy. I will always know who I'm representing when I say my name. I will always know who I am when I say my name. I will always know who I am when my name is said, a strong, loyal, and cunning man who will fight for his country as much as his family has.
